How far is too far for one to redeem themselves?.. And to what extreme would you go to do it?

Ok Don this one is going to be hard for me to express without giving away the story. So I will be quick and jump around my thoughts.
This movie I believe and It's own twisted way, was meant to be inspiring and uplifting, but in a small way, failed in the end. As I followed Will Smith through his journey of redemption, I could not help but see and feel a heavy sense of dread, depression,burden, unforgiveness and deep self hatred. A role in which I was not prepared for, nor used to seeing Will play. For me Will's charachter and performance was at times, a bit complexed. At times, he was powerful, forceful, and engaging on screen, then there were moments where he appeared disengaged from his charachter. The inconsistancy made it difficult for me at times, to root for our damaged hero to the light that I thought would be at the end of the tunnel.(Boy did I get a kick in the stomache!).
The concept of the movie was well thought out. I would score it high for storyline, but I did not think it was executed very well on screen. It lacks a in-depth ending in the storyline. I would have loved to seen, that what he gave was well worth it.
Although I did not like the ending from a moral and controversial point of view, that could be argued. I have too say I do sooo love when Hollywood takes a big risk, and is not afraid to be controversial.
Yes Don the movie had me sucked in right from start to finish, leaving me with a over sense of sadness and un-fullfilled, as the ending was quite rushed. (Oh yeah did I mention I also felt like I was kinda kicked in the stomache!). It's kinda hard to feel inspiring with such a ending.
I don't think that this is one of Will Smith's best perfornamces, But I do think he did put his best foot forward on this one and did a good job. I just don't think this was the role for him, and nor was I prepared for it.
