Tells of Maxim, a young astronaut who finds a new planet while traveling through space in the year 2157. This is the best sci-fi film I've ever seen next to V for Vendetta or Equilibrium. The scenes are beautifully done and the story is both inspiring and frustrating all at the same time. Being from the USA I was not lucky enough to see this until around 2011 and I'm so lucky I did! I can't say enough good things about this film, both the actors and the sets. I unfortunately can't understand Russian or Deutsch (blame American education) but I did find subtitles that make this film understandable-somewhat. I really had to research this film to find out more about it:
1. It's based on a Russian novel by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky called Prisoners of Power. There are 2 versions censored/uncensored - only the censored version was released in the USA. It also is a very old novel from around the 80's and hasn't been re-published in a long time for some bizarre reason.
2. Someone made the claim below that 2 other novels are somehow related Beetle in the Anthill and The Time Wanderers. I can find nothing to suggest these are sequels or prequels to the Prisoners of Power novel. They might include the same universe but have nothing to do with the story directly. From what I've read they planned to do a 2nd book in this series but Arkady Strugatsky died and his brother felt he could not bring himself to write it, which is unfortunate because I adore this film!
3. I think Dark Planet (Limited Steelbook Edition) includes both films and a "making of" feature but I can't be sure as I don't understand the language. I also believe Dark Planet: The Inhabited Island Rebellion includes both films without the "making of" feature. Then you have Dark Planet: Prisoners of Power which I think is the uncut version or extended, whichever you call it. However since I don't understand the native languages you'd need to investigate yourselves further.
I intend to make use of Google Translator one day on these subtitles but not right now =)
I bought the Prisoners of Power english novel online and will read it soon! These films deserve so much more credit and a wider release to audiences in the USA. I really feel they got lost in the cultural clash between us and certainly are just as great as Black Lightening!
